Cold Weather Skin Care - Winter Addition!

Updated: Dec 17, 2021

Who else starts to miss their summer glow as the winter season rolls around?

Don't worry, with a little natural intervention we can keep that skin fresh and healthy - even during that dry weather!

So why exactly does our skin dry out?

There are a few different reasons:

  • Lower Humidity: As the weather gets colder and the wind picks up the moisture held within the skin begins to deplete at a faster rate - ultimately drying out the skin.

  • Use of artificial heat: Similar to the weather getting colder, as you increase the level of artificial heat within the house - the less humidity you will have.

  • Use of chemical filled soaps, cleansers, moisturizers, etc.: Using products that contain chemicals such as parabens, phthalates, benzophenone, or 4-methylbenzylidene camphor can have a drying effect on the skin as well. These chemicals tend to strip the natural oils we have on our skin while also creating issues with increased phytoestrogens in the body which can lead to cancer, allergies, and many other unintentional consequences.

  • Lack of Hydration: As it gets colder our bodies begin to dry out making additional water consumption a very important addition to your daily skin care.

  • Lack of good Fats: with direct connections between gut bio and skin health, increasing your daily intake of healthy fats can help with dry skin. Adding good fats like avocado, olive oil, etc. is a great way to replenish the body.

  • Age: mainly due to decrease of the outermost layer of skin (stratum corneum)

Adding just a few of these ideas into your daily routine is a fantastic way to start combating for that winter skin. Featured in the photo above is one of my favorite Etsy shops that help keep my skin feeling soft and lush all winter long - the hardest part by far has been finding good products that leave out the chemicals and instead utilize natural ingredients the body and environment will love!

Etsy is a great place to find small businesses who truly care about the health of their customers unlike the big brands who only care for their profits!

My top picks:

- ButterMeUp Organics

- Addictive Cosmetics

- Rooted Earth

- Moonrise Creek

- Bella and Rose Natural
